I just glanced out on the deck and noticed my writing table. It’s what I’ve been putting my laptop on for the last few months whenever I sit down to write. As I looked at it, it suddenly occurred to me that I’ve gone from ‘official space with official writing table’ to ‘any handy spot I can sit while balancing my laptop on my lap when inspiration hits’.
It’s funny to me; I thought I would always write at ‘the table’. I thought success would be in the rigidness of my routine, believing the ritual of writing in the same place every time would be the magic behind the flow of inspiration. Apparently it’s not that cut and dried, and it’s reminding me that for all I think I know about my creative self, there’s always room for a few surprises.
I love that writing table, and will continue to use it. I can write inside or outside, as the legs slide happily under whatever I choose to sit on. But I also love the freedom of grabbing my laptop on my way from one room to another, swinging my legs up on the couch as I sit lengthwise, eager to get a thought down that has just stopped me in my tracks. I’ve even been known to write in bed in the mornings now and then. In fact, I have come to know this: quiet mornings + freshly-brewed coffee + my laptop = binge writing. Always.
What’s your favorite creative space? Where do you feel the most inspired? Leave me a comment and let me know what works for you and how you’ve come to know yourself through the creative process!

Love this! I’m most creative when I’m outside, usually alone. I love going for a long walk and having my phone with me to jot down some notes or send myself an e-mail as I go. That’s where my head is clear, that’s where inspiration usually strikes 😊

I agree Briana, being out in nature is an amazing environment for inspiration. It’s exciting when we start to see the correlation between our surroundings and the flow of creative thought. Thanks for sharing!
